Book Review: Giving Thanks

Thankfully, even when I feel like I can’t do much of anything else, I can still do one of my favorite things: read! This month, one of the books I focused on is called A Simple Act of Gratitude: How Learning to Say Thank You Changed My Life. I found this book while browsing in a bookstore several months ago (another of my favorite things to do), and I was excited to finally get a chance to read it.

One of the things I really liked about this book was where the author started from — he was at a really low point in his life…financially, emotionally, and physically. It didn’t seem like much was going right — in fact, I think he referred to it as the worst year of his life. It was at that point, when he felt he had hit rock bottom, that he got the directive to express gratitude for what he did have. At first, it didn’t seem like much. But what I loved was the more that he thanked, the more that he received…not in the monetary or physical sense necessarily, but the more value he placed on what he did have, the more his eyes were opened to blessings all around him. As the author’s thank you notes began to make changes in his life, I was reminded that no matter how bad things get, there is always a chance to start again…and if we choose to, we can take action to make our lives better.

This book spoke right to my heart — I am the kind of person who will find a reason to worry or fret in every situation…if I’m being honest, I tend to look for the negative or seek out the potential problems — maybe I do this as a means to be proactive and ward off the bad or maybe I do it out of a misguided guilt for actually finding joy. Whatever the cause, this book reiterated to me that we can choose our attitude in the midst of our circumstances — because we are all going to have good days and we are all going to have bad days, but a simple act of intentionality (being grateful!) can completely change our perspective and impact the ultimate happiness we get out of life.

I really enjoyed the book — it had some short chapters which always makes me feel like I’m accomplishing something! I appreciate a book that challenges me to be a better person and speaks to the heart of one of my challenges — and this book did just that!

How to be a Great Mom

Did I get your attention with that title? Isn’t that what we’re all striving for? Even though there isn’t a guidebook anywhere that spells out exactly how to be the greatest mom ever, I wanted to share a little of the document I put together called The OVERall Guide to Mastering Motherhood.

In a little over 200 pages, this book raises all of the major issues that I could think of regarding how to be a great mom — and lets you in on where I’ve failed and what I’ve learned along the way. It also gives you some “thoughts to ponder” and “actions to consider” — practical ideas for how you might apply each topic in your own life!

This book embraces the keys to (what I believe) make a great mom: a woman who never stops learning, never stops trying, and never stops loving…

It covers a wide range of topics — from motherhood basics to marriage to managing your home to making time to exercise — and much more! I would love to hear your thoughts on what I’ve put together — and for a limited time, I am offering a free sample of the first section of the book!  To download a pdf version, please click here.
